Some clematis varieties such as the Italian Clematis (Clematis viticella) must be cut regularly so that they and persistent bloom luxuriantly. Here’s how.

The rear section of the different clematis varieties is at first sight rather complicated. While most large-flowered hybrids, cut back slightly, the wild species hardly cut mainly.  The strongest need pruning summer flowering clematis such as among the large group of Italian Clematis (Clematis viticella varieties) and some summer blooming large-flowered hybrids such as the old-variety ‘Jackmanii’.

An indication of the correct cutting method is the golden age: All clematis species, only from the mid to late June bloom, flowers bear only on the new wood, so the instincts, the same year, arose in the first place.  The plants bloom in May, are varieties that are already in the previous year on the older shoots have formed flower buds.  This group includes most of the large flowered hybrids, but also many wild forms such as the Alpine Clematis (Clematis alpina varieties) and the Anemone Clematis (Clematis montana varieties).

Summer flowering clematis cutting
The best cutting date for the varieties of Italian Clematis is February.  The plants are blooming as summer flowering shrubs cut back sharply. One way to encourage the formation of new long shoots, with many large flowers.  It is enough if each main shoot only 30-50 cm of left over.  When you remove the rear section, the summer-flowering clematis commended stick from below and be lazy in flowering after a few years.  The same section also applies to summer flowering wild species such as the gold clematis (Clematis tangutica).

A special role is one of the two flowering hybrids.  They carry their flowers as the roses bloom more often in the same year at the old and new wood. Such factors include the known varieties ‘The President’ and ‘Snow Queen’. One can also how the summer-flowering species prune rigorously.  However, it wipes out all the buds for spring bloom, while the second bloom in summer promotes.

Experts recommend vigorous varieties such as every other engine cut back on this, while the other half remains uncut at first and if necessary after the first flower stage once something is trimmed.  In this way a balance between spring and summer bloom.
